World Cup in Action

Chasing a target of 289 set by the Windies during the 1979 finals, English openers Mike Brearley and Geoffrey Boycott batted sedately without regard to the overs. It had later been said that skipper Clive Lloyd had deliberately dropped a sitter of a catch from Boycott so the two could continue batting slowly! "That indeed would have been a clever move at that stage," Lloyd had said later denying the rumour.

Ponting looking forward to another final

After demolishing South Africa by 7 wickets in the 2nd semi-final Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said that his side was all pumped up for the summit clash against Sri Lanka on Saturday.

“It’s a fantastic feeling. It was a great day for us today and we are really looking forward to the final,” said the Aussie skipper.

Ponting was all praise for his bowlers who dismissed South Africa for a mere 149. “The bowlers did a fantastic job. McGrath and Bracken have been getting us the early breakthroughs consistently and Hogg and Tait have been superb. All credit to the boys they have worked really hard.”

“Our top order batting also has been excellent. Hopefully they will stand up and be counted again in the final,” added Ponting who, along with McGrath, will be playing in his 4th consecutive ICC Cricket World Cup final.

“We were beaten by a better team,” admitted South African skipper Graeme Smith.

“We tried to be positive upfront but their bowlers were just too good for us,” said Smith on his team’s extraordinary batting collapse.

Reflecting back on his team’s performance in the tournament Smith said, “We have been a little bit up and down and at times we haven’t played our best cricket but no one can fault the guys for not trying hard.”

He did not forget to thank the supporters for cheering their team all through and also extended his wishes to Australia for the grand finale on Saturday.

Man of the Match Glenn McGrath felt that things were falling pretty much in place for him. ‘It’s been going great. I can’t complain.”

No host nation has won the ICC Cricket World Cup on its soil. Sri Lanka, the joint hosts in 1996, won the final played in Lahore, Pakistan.
