World Cup in Action

Chasing a target of 289 set by the Windies during the 1979 finals, English openers Mike Brearley and Geoffrey Boycott batted sedately without regard to the overs. It had later been said that skipper Clive Lloyd had deliberately dropped a sitter of a catch from Boycott so the two could continue batting slowly! "That indeed would have been a clever move at that stage," Lloyd had said later denying the rumour.

1979 - Eng v NZ: When New Zealand almost made it to the final

The one team in world cricket that justifies its Dark Horse tag consistently is New Zealand. Though they manage very often to make life difficult for top opponents, they, however, are rarely a side of stars.
1983 - Aus v Zim: The day Australia ate humble pie

In the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup, Australia were joint favourites with holders West Indies to win the tournament. But as it turned out, they not only failed to make it to the semi-finals, they also lost a crucial match to Zimbabwe.
1983 - Ind v WI: When Kapil's Devils beat the world's best

In 1983, the Indian team led by Kapil Dev won the ICC Cricket World Cup against odds of 100 to 1. That is what Ladbrokes, the leading bookmakers in England, had offered on the team at the start of the competition.
1987 - Ind v Aus: When India went down by just one run

The ICC Cricket World Cup came out of England for the first time in 1987, with India and Pakistan playing joint host. It was also the first time that the format was changed to 50 overs an innings from the earlier 60. Pakistan were given the honour of staging the first match in Hyderabad, Sindh. The first match to be held in India the next day, however, provided an absolute thriller.
1991/92 - Ind v Aus: Losing by one run... again

When it came to close matches, especially against Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cups, the rub of the green always went against India. The 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand and it promised to be the finest cricket tournament till then, and perhaps it was -- but it is remembered also for the rain rule that thwarted brave South Africa's victory charge.
1996 - WI v Aus: Windies missed out by a whisker

There was plenty of drama when the ICC Cricket World Cup came to the subcontinent for the second time in 1996. This was the first time three countries - India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - jointly hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup..
1999 - SA v Aus: Perhaps the greatest World Cup match

The ICC Cricket World Cup returned to its place of birth - England - after 1983 when the 1999 edition was played there.
2003 - Ind v Pak: When Tendulkar ruined Pakistan's party

The 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup started off on a slow note for India, and by the time they took on Pakistan at the Centurion in South Africa, there was still a bit of uncertainty surrounding the team. The heartening fact for the Indians was that they had never lost to Pakistan in an ICC Cricket World Cup encounter, and Waqar Younis-led Pakistan were keen to reverse the trend.
   Super-8 Standings

No host nation has won the ICC Cricket World Cup on its soil. Sri Lanka, the joint hosts in 1996, won the final played in Lahore, Pakistan.
