Chasing a target of 289 set by the Windies during the 1979 finals, English openers Mike Brearley and Geoffrey Boycott batted sedately without regard to the overs. It had later been said that skipper Clive Lloyd had deliberately dropped a sitter of a catch from Boycott so the two could continue batting slowly! "That indeed would have been a clever move at that stage," Lloyd had said later denying the rumour. |

| Defining Moment |
Warne taking four wickets for 36 runs |
| There was plenty of
drama when the ICC Cricket World Cup came to the subcontinent
for the second time in 1996. This was the first time
three countries - India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - jointly
hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The tournament started amid controversy as Australia
and West Indies decided to boycott their league matches
against Sri Lanka in that country citing security reasons.
This did not go down well in Lanka, and the islanders
savoured their victory in the final when they beat Australia.
The game
The close encounter of interest in the 1996 ICC Cricket
World Cup was the semi-final played between West Indies
and Australia in Mohali, Punjab.
Here is an interesting factoid about that game: Of the
18 wickets to fall that day, 12 batsmen fell for less
than 10 runs. For Australia, Stuart Law, Michael Bevan
and Ian Healy - batting at five, six and seven - reached
the two-figure mark while the top four West Indians
went into double figures.
The start
It was a dream start for the Windies, having reduced
Australia to 15 for four. Back in the pavilion were
the Waugh twins, Mark and Steve, along with Mark Taylor
and Ricky Ponting.
Curtly Ambrose and Ian Bishop were running through the
Aussies before Law and Bevan stepped up. Law scored
72, Bevan 69 and Ian Healy, the wicket-keeper, chipped
in with 31 to take Australia to 207 for eight in 50
overs.
The run chase
The Windies started very well and were winning it at
a canter when the board read 173 for four. Opening batsman
Shivnaraine Chanderpaul smashed a brilliant 80 and Brian
Lara made a sublime, run-a-ball 45. It looked like West
Indies would march into the finals.
The great Warne
Enter Warne, the master of big occasion, and the game
changed quickly. The Windies, from 173 for four, slid
to 202 all out in a matter of a few overs.
From number five to 11, none of the Windies batsmen
reached double figures, much to the horror of their
skipper Richie Richardson, who was stranded at the other
end for 49.
Warne took four wickets for 36 runs in nine overs and
Australia got rid of the last West Indies wicket with
three balls to spare and won the match by just five
runs.

No host nation has won the ICC Cricket World Cup on its soil. Sri Lanka, the joint hosts in 1996, won the final played in Lahore, Pakistan. |
