Chasing a target of 289 set by the Windies during the 1979 finals, English openers Mike Brearley and Geoffrey Boycott batted sedately without regard to the overs. It had later been said that skipper Clive Lloyd had deliberately dropped a sitter of a catch from Boycott so the two could continue batting slowly! "That indeed would have been a clever move at that stage," Lloyd had said later denying the rumour. |

| Defining Moment |
The Aussie fielding which ran out Azharuddin, Manjrekar,
Manoj Prabhakar and Venkatpathy Raju. |
| When it came to close matches, especially
against Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cups, the rub of the
green always went against India. The 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup
was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand and it promised
to be the finest cricket tournament till then, and perhaps it was
-- but it is remembered also for the rain rule that thwarted brave
South Africa's victory charge.
The game
Title favourites Australia took on Dark Horse India at Brisbane
in the 12th match of the 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup. The Aussies,
led by Allan Border, came to the match in very poor form, having
lost to New Zealand, South Africa and England; Mohammed Azharuddin's
Indians were faring no better.
Australia batted first and scored 237 for nine in their 50. Dean
Jones, the number one Australian batsman in one-day cricket at that
time, scored 90. David Boon, who was also the wicket-keeper for
the match, scored 43.
For India, Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar took three wickets each,
both also conceding exactly 41 runs. It was a fine Indian performance
in the field and the target was very gettable.
The run chase
Azharuddin gave the Australians a huge scare and batted easily to
get his 93 runs off 103 balls. Sanjay Manjrekar, struggling for
runs, scored a valuable 47.
The run outs
All told, the Indians' running between the wickets is what lost
them the match. Four batsmen ran themselves out: Azhar, Manjrekar,
Prabhakar and V Raju. As is usually the case, the Aussie fielding
was first rate.
The final over
The final over was a cracker and the last ball even more so. Off
it, India needed four to win and Javagal Srinath faced Tom Moody.
Srinath swung his bat, connected, and sent the ball arcing into
midwicket. Steve Waugh at the boundary dropped a sitter, but reacted
quickly to sling in his throw.
Srinath and Raju thought initially that the ball was out of the
park, then ran two and while going for the third Raju was run-out
thanks to a clean pick-up from part-time wicket-keeper Boon. India
ended up with 234 and lost by one run after the target was revised,
the second time in successive ICC Cricket World Cups that they lost
to the Aussies by a run.
