Chasing a target of 289 set by the Windies during the 1979 finals, English openers Mike Brearley and Geoffrey Boycott batted sedately without regard to the overs. It had later been said that skipper Clive Lloyd had deliberately dropped a sitter of a catch from Boycott so the two could continue batting slowly! "That indeed would have been a clever move at that stage," Lloyd had said later denying the rumour. |

| Defining Moment |
When Tendulkar went ballistic and smashed Shoaib Akhtar,
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis for 98 |
| The 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup started
off on a slow note for India, and by the time they took on Pakistan
at the Centurion in South Africa, there was still a bit of uncertainty
surrounding the team. The heartening fact for the Indians was that
they had never lost to Pakistan in an ICC Cricket World Cup encounter,
and Waqar Younis-led Pakistan were keen to reverse the trend.
The match
It was a day of the veteran, Saeed Anwar, as Pakistan batted first
and posted a challenging 273 for 7 in 50 overs. Left-handed Anwar,
sporting a flowing beard, and an equally flowing style, had a field
day.
Anwar ended up with 101 off 126 balls with seven fours. The rest
of the Pakistani batting was a bit patchy and the next best score
was 32 made by Younis Khan. However, a total of 273 was surely competitive,
backed as it was by a bowling attack comprising Wasim Akram, Waqar
Younis and Shoaib Akhtar.
Smashing Sachin
Though their record against Pakistan was fine, India had an interesting
statistic against them as well: Before this match, they had never
successfully chased more than 222 in an ICC Cricket World Cup encounter.
However, for India, when Sachin Tendulkar is on song, stats get
thrown out of the window.
In their reply, Tendulkar smashed Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram and
Waqar Younis for 98, and Rahul Dravid with Yuvraj Singh kept cool
heads to see India through in 45.4 overs. Sachin Tendulkar was adjudged
match of the match and India qualified to the Super Sixes.
The fatal first over
The first over was bowled by Shoaib Akhtar, and the tenor of the
innings was set by Tendulkar who went ballistic. First he played
an undercut, sending the ball over point for six. This was followed
by a four to the midwicket fence and then a copybook on-drive signalled
another four.
Dravid-Yuvraj combo
When Tendulkar fell, to a superb Shoaib ball that climbed into him,
India were still not out of the trouble. However, Dravid and Yuvraj
ensured that there were no further nervous moments and raised a
big partnership without fuss to take India home and their record
against Pakistan in ICC Cricket World Cup matches intact.

No host nation has won the ICC Cricket World Cup on its soil. Sri Lanka, the joint hosts in 1996, won the final played in Lahore, Pakistan. |
